After the animated TV special from 1966, and the Academy Award winning live action feature film from 2000; this one is an animated feature film directed by Yarrow Cheney and produced by Illumination, known for the Despicable Me trilogy.
We really like the score for this film. Illumination has always hired hip-hop musicians along with traditional composers to compose their scores, such as Pharrell Williams for the Despicable Me trilogy. This time, they’ve hired Luke’s personal favorites: Tyler, The Creator and composer Danny Elfman. Tyler’s bright and bouncy production combined with Danny’s fantastical style of scoring really adds to the cartoonish atmosphere of the movie.
The animation is decent. It’s cartoony, polished, and bright. The animals, such as Grinch’s dog, Max, look really good and cute and Grinch isn’t too bad himself, but the “Whos” just look like generic human characters, and leave a lot to be desired.
